Acme threads, developed in the 1890s, were designed to replace square threads and other formed threads to produce traversing motions on machines, tools, and for heavy load applications. The Acme thread form offered significant advantages over square threads, which had straight-sided flanks, were difficult to manufacture with available cutter technology, and were inherently weak at the base of the thread due to sharp 90-degree flank angles.
